How Health Canada's Vape Excise Tax Works (Explained Simply)
🔹 What Is the Federal Excise Duty on Vapes?
Since October 1, 2022, Health Canada requires all licensed manufacturers and importers of vaping products to pay an excise duty (tax) before selling their products in Canada.
This tax applies to:
• Bottled e-liquids
• Pre-filled pods or cartridges
• Disposable vapes
⸻
🔹 How the Vape Excise Tax Is Calculated
The excise tax is charged based on the volume of e-liquid in milliliters (mL) inside the product.
Here’s the official formula: (for Non-Specified provinces that include Newfoundland, NS, British Columbia and Saskatchewan) For all other "Specified Provinces" this rate is double(Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, PEI, New Brunswick, NWT and Yukon)
• $1.12 per 2 mL of e-liquid the first 10 mL in a container
• $1.12 per 10 mL for any amount above 10 mL
⸻
✅ Examples of Tax on Common Vape Products
1. 2 mL Disposable Vape
• First 2 mL = $1.12 tax
• Total Excise Tax: $1.12
2. 10 mL Pod Pack (like a pod kit refill)
• First 10 mL = $5.60 tax
• Total Excise Tax: $5.60
3. 30 mL Bottle of E-Liquid
• First 10 mL = $5.60 tax
• Remaining 20 mL = $2.24 tax ($1.12 per 10 mL)
• Total Excise Tax: $7.84
4. 60 mL Bottle of E-Liquid
• First 10 mL = $5.60 tax
• Remaining 50 mL = $5.60 tax ($1 per 10 mL)
• Total Excise Tax: $11.20
⸻
🔹 How Do You Know It’s Paid?
Every legal vape product in Canada must now carry a Canada Excise Stamp on the packaging.
• This stamp proves the duty has been paid.
• No stamp = not compliant with Health Canada regulations.
⸻
🔹 Why Did Canada Introduce This Tax?
Health Canada introduced the vape excise tax to:
• Reduce youth vaping rates
• Generate federal revenue
• Align vaping regulations with tobacco and cannabis taxation
⸻
🔹 What It Means for You
• Prices on vape products in Canada are now higher than before 2022.
• When you see the excise stamp, you know your product is legal and compliant.
• Online vape shops like VapeCity.ca are required to sell only stamped, tax-paid products.
