As vaping technology has evolved, rechargeable pod systems, disposable vapes and other battery-powered vaping devices have become increasingly common. But with that growth comes an important question:
What should you do with a vape device when you’re finished with it?
Throwing an old vape into the regular garbage may seem like the easiest option, but it isn’t necessarily the most responsible one.
That’s why East Coast Distribution – VapeCity Canada is pleased to help raise awareness of RecyclVape, a vape recycling initiative with a simple but important goal: helping people dispose of their old vape devices more responsibly instead of throwing them into the trash.
Many modern vaping devices contain electronic components, plastics, metals and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Even when a device no longer works, its battery may still contain a residual electrical charge. Battery recycling organizations such as Call2Recycle Canada warn that improperly discarded lithium-ion batteries can create safety concerns, including the possibility of sparks and fires, while recycling helps keep batteries and recoverable materials out of the regular waste stream.
A used vape therefore isn't simply another piece of household garbage.
It is a small battery-powered electronic device, and whenever an appropriate recycling option is available, responsible recovery is a much better alternative to simply tossing it into a garbage bag.
Proper vape battery safety and care is especially important with lithium-ion powered devices.
RecyclVape was created to encourage vape users to think differently about what happens to their devices after they have reached the end of their useful life.
The goal is straightforward:
Instead of throwing your old vape devices in the garbage, recycle them responsibly.
Initiatives like RecyclVape can help bring attention to an issue that is becoming increasingly important as battery-powered disposable and rechargeable vaping devices become more widespread.
Responsible vaping shouldn't end when the device is empty.
It should also include thinking about what happens to that device afterwards.
Disposable vapes are particularly important to consider because the battery is commonly integrated directly into the device.
Once the e-liquid is depleted or the device stops functioning, the entire unit may be discarded. However, the device can still contain a battery along with electronic and other potentially recoverable components.
Established Canadian recycling programs already recognize vaping products as a distinct recycling category. Call2Recycle Canada, for example, operates a program in Quebec specifically for battery-powered vapes, e-cigarettes and their components, demonstrating the growing recognition that these products require proper end-of-life management.
Programs and community initiatives that encourage proper vape disposal are therefore an important part of building better recycling habits.
Depending on what is accepted by the recycling program available in your area, products that may require responsible disposal include:
Disposable vape devices
Rechargeable vape devices
Pod systems
Vape mods
Internal lithium-ion battery devices
Removable rechargeable vape batteries
Electronic vaping components
Always confirm what a particular collection or recycling program accepts before dropping off a product.
Damaged, swollen, leaking or defective lithium-ion batteries may require special handling and should not simply be placed into an ordinary recycling container. Call2Recycle Canada specifically advises that damaged lithium-ion batteries require specialized handling because of their potential fire risk.
One vape device may seem insignificant.
But consider the number of electronic vaping devices used over the course of a year.
When thousands of individual users make the same decision to throw a device into the garbage, those individual devices collectively become a much larger waste problem.
Changing that habit starts with awareness.
Instead of asking:
“Where is the garbage?”
we can start asking:
“Where can I recycle this?”
That simple change in thinking is exactly why projects such as RecyclVape deserve greater awareness.
At East Coast Distribution – VapeCity Canada, we believe being part of the Canadian vaping industry involves more than simply selling vaping products.
It also means encouraging responsible practices throughout the entire life cycle of those products — from proper battery care and safe device use to responsible end-of-life disposal.
We are therefore happy to help bring attention to RecyclVape and its efforts to encourage responsible vape recycling.
We encourage our adult customers and members of the vaping community to learn more about the initiative, share it with other adult vape users and help spread the message:
Small changes in how we handle used vaping products today can contribute to cleaner communities and better recycling habits tomorrow.

Sharing the RecyclVape project with other adult vape users is another simple way to help increase awareness.
The more people who know there are alternatives to throwing old vape devices into the garbage, the more likely responsible vape disposal becomes the normal choice.
The next time your disposable vape, pod system or rechargeable vaping device reaches the end of its useful life, think twice before putting it in the trash.
Look for an appropriate recycling option.
Support programs working toward better solutions.
And help spread the word about initiatives like RecyclVape.
Use responsibly. Dispose responsibly. Recycle responsibly.
